C1net’s first funding event was a great success with 34 attendees assembling at the Trent Building, University Park, University of Nottingham. The sunshine and historic venue encouraged active networking, making this an enjoyable and fruitful event. The sandpit opened with inspiring talks from Nigel Minton (University of Nottingham) and Michelle Gradley (BioSyntha). Following that Rebecca Wood from KTN skillfully facilitated to nurture embryonic ideas into fully grown Proof of Concept projects with the aid of lots of sticky dots and post-it notes.
Several applications were made for the three POC £50K awards, the results announced in October 2014 were :-
- Andrezek Kierzek (University of Surrey) “Metabolic modelling to support synthetic biology in C1net organisms.”
- Phillip Wright (University of Sheffield) “A proteomic approach to optimizing gas fermentation in industrially relevant acetogens”
- Ying Zhang (University of Nottingham) “Industrially-driven discovery of C1-utilising microorganisms”
